What is Settings in a book?
Settings in a book refer to the time and place of a narrative or story. It defines the period and location within which a story in a book takes place.
From the definition above, settings refer to two things basically and they are:
- Time (period)
- Place (location)
Some places and time in a book are real while in some books the author tries to create an imaginary time and place for his work. While an author does this, he employs a particular society and creates things and images related to the kind of society he wants to convey in his work.
So if you are searching for the settings of the JAMB book, it means that you are looking for the location and period of the story.

What is the Setting in the Life Changer – JAMB New Novel
To further rephrase the question above, where and when did the story in the Life Changer take place?
To answer the question above, this article will be divided into two parts. The first part will show you the location (place) of the story while the second part will show the time (period) of the story.
Where did the story in The Life Changer Happen – Location?
According to the book, the story in The Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli happened in Kongo campus in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, located in Kaduna State, Nigeria.
Let’s prove the above statement. First, the name of the university was first mentioned in chapter one of the book when Omar, the son of Ummi was offered an admission. He got admission to study law in Kongo campus in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.
Ahmadu Bello University operates two campuses: the main campus in Samaru, a suburb of Zaria in Kaduna State, and Kongo (a mini-campus) located in Zaria and it was mentioned that Omar got admission to study law in Kongo campus, ABU.
Again, while Ummi told her story, she referred to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria as where she got admission. Ummi and Salma attended the same school. This simply means that Salma, being the protagonist in the book attended Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and that the whole story revolved around her life in the same university.
From the above paragraphs it is clear that the author used the Nigerian University settings to pass her message and that the locations she used where real.

When did the story in The Life Changer Take Place – Time?
There was no particular period mentioned in the book as to when the story happened. However, some periods where mentioned such as 20 years ago (as mentioned by Ummi to her children).
Other points where also mentioned in the book which can help us trace when the story actually happened. Now, let’s begin.
Point 1:
First, the book (The Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli) was published in 2020.
Point 2:
While Ummi told her story, she said that she got admission to study in the University 20 years ago.
Point 3:
Ahmadu Bello University was established on 4th October, 1962. This simply means that the university was already in existence before the whole story started.
Point 4:
The book talked about Salim who was on different social media platforms. I believe joining a social media in Nigeria would never be possible without a phone and phone was first invented in Nigeria in the year 2001.
Point 5:
The whole story happened while Ummi and Salma where still in the university. They studied a 4 year course which shows us that the whole story happened within four years.

Tracing the Setting – Period
Now, since the book was first published in 2020 and Ummi in the book stated that she was admitted into the university 20 years ago, it shows that Ummi was admitted in the year 2000. In the same manner, Salma was admitted in the 2000.
Since both had 4 years to stay in school and the whole story also happened during their school period, it simply means that the story happened from 2000 to 2004.
So, from the analysis above, it can be said that the story in The Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli happened between 2000 to 2004 which is the early years of 21st century.
