About The Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship

The aim of The Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship is to help the Florida resident students who are finding it difficult to further their higher education because of financial instability. The main reason for this initiative is to promote the development of Florida by educating its residents to create a fine society. It offers required financial aid to the benefactor to contribute to the development of Florida. This initiative inspires students to keep an outstanding academic record to be eligible for all the benefits this scholarship program offers.

The NYAC Scholarship Committee and the New York Alumnae Deltas, Inc. also have the Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship for students intending to go to college, students of African descent living within this service location Manhattan river-to-river south of 155th Street, New York. The goal of this scholarship is to support passing out high-school seniors through four years of college in the quest for a baccalaureate degree.

To be considered for the New York Mary McLeod Bethune scholarship

  1. All applicants must be a student of African descent.

  2. All applicants must reside within this service area: Manhattan east-west from the east river to the Hudson River and the north to south down 5th Street south to Battery Park.

  3. All applicants must be passing out high school seniors and have an “80” or more high school average.

  4. All applicants must be active in a non-academic activity, do volunteer work, have a part-time job or be active in a community organization (church, etc).

  5. All applicants must be accepted to a Baccalaureate Degree program at a registered institution by the fall semester of 2022 (A Bursar’s receipt or letter from the Registrar/Admissions Office is required at that time).

Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship Amount

Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship Amount is up to $3,000 annually, renewable for a maximum of 8 semesters (twelve quarters) over a period of 6 straight years, or until the student obtains a baccalaureate degree, whichever comes first.

Undergraduate students partaking in college-preparatory instruction, students needing additional time to meet the college-level communication and computation skills testing programs (CLAST), or students registered in a five-year undergraduate degree program are qualified to receive financial assistance for a max of 10 semesters or 15 quarters. A renewal candidate must have gotten at least a minimum institutional cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and made the equivalent of twelve credit hours for each term an award was obtained during the academic year. Eligibility for renewal is decided at the end of the second semester or third quarter of each academic year.

Credit hours gained during the last summer can be counted toward the total number of credit hours needed. A student should ask the post secondary institution for renewal requirements specified by the institution.  The total money granted for this scholarship is $3,000.

Scholarship Amount Requirements and Eligibility

All applicants must:

  1. Be a Florida resident and a United State citizen or eligible non-citizen. A student’s residence and citizenship status are defined by the postsecondary institution. Inquiries concerning such status should be directed to the financial assistance office or admissions office of the institution the student intends to attend.
  2. Must not have previously obtained a baccalaureate degree.
  3. Register at Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters College, Florida A&M University, or Florida Memorial University as a degree or undergraduate student for a minimum of 12 credit hours per term. Applications must be received from financial assistance offices at Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters College, Florida Memorial University, or Florida A&M University.
  4. No owe fund or be in bankruptcy under any state or federal grant, loan, or scholarship program unless acceptable agreements to repay have been made.
  5. Have gained a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent, toward a high school certificate.

Scholarship Deadline and Opening Dates

The applicants must send their application along with other requirements by spring annually. Applications and other information are open on the main website of the Florida Department of Education.

Only eligible candidates are welcome to apply for this scholarship program. Applications must be received from financial assistance offices at either Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters College, Florida A&M University, or Florida Memorial University.
