When a protagonist’s life ends well in a story, we say that the story is comedy but when it ends in a bad way, we say the story is tragic. In a case where both tragedy and comedy exists at the end of a literary work, we say that such work is tragicomedy.

There may be other major characters in a novel or drama but their whole actions may be in favour or against a particular character. In other words, the actions of other characters affects the life of a protagonist either positively or negatively.

The biggest force against a protagonist is the antagonist. So, the antagonist does opposite of whatever the protagonist does.

Who is an antagonist in a novel/drama?

An antagonist is one of the major characters whose efforts are geared towards destroying or rendering the efforts of the protagonist useless. An antagonist is the biggest force against the protagonist.

An antagonist in a book may come in different dimensions. It may be in form of a quality existing within the protagonist. For instance, where the protagonist has fear, pride or any other quality that may cause his downfall.

Antagonism may also be in form of another character in a book. Finally, it may come as a result of any other external factor surrounding the life of the protagonist. This simply explains that an antagonist is not necessarily a person.

Who is the protagonist in the Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli?

The protagonist in The Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli is Salma. The whole story revolves around her life while she was in the University.

The whole story talks about University as Salma’s life changer. As we see at the end of the book, Salma’s life was changed for good.

Furthermore, the title of the novel, The Life Changer was coiled from the lifestyle of Salma and the latter effect.

However, some people argue that Ummi is the protagonist in the novel and not Salma.

Is Ummi the protagonist in The Life Changer? No, Ummi is not the protagonist in The Life Changer rather she is the narrator who narrated from the third point of view.

She had the omnipotent ability. She has the ability to narrate all about the characters in the book as she knows everything about each of the characters. So, the author of the novel simply used the voice of Ummi to convey his message. So, Ummi is not the protagonist, rather, Salma is.

Out of all the qualities showcased by Salma in the book, there were only two qualities which manifested in her life majorly. These qualities are: pride and arrogance.

Pride and arrogance caused Salma to publicly liken the lecturers to the police. She described both parties as corrupt who can collect just a little token to help you out. She also boasted of her ability to win a lecturer’s attention by offering as little as 2,000 to 3,000 Naira.

Pride cause her to turn down Habib’s proposal thinking that it will upgrade her level in the university for rejecting a rich man’s proposal. Meanwhile, she actually wanted to be with Habib.

Pride and arrogance also caused her to see her roommates as people she cannot cope with since they are not as sophisticated as she is.

Who is the antagonist in The Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli? Pride and arrogance served as the antagonist in the novel as Salma was deeply affected due to her arrogant life in the university.

Although Ummi is one of the major characters, she does not showcase as the protagonist.

On the other hand, Salma’s proud and arrogant lifestyle caused her to move from one problem to another. She may have other evident qualities but these two (pride and arrogance) manifested the most.
