The Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarship was created to honor Louise McKinney. It rewards students for their academic success and encourages them to stay in their undergraduate or graduate program of study.

The Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarships are of two categories as outlined on this page.

1. Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarship

  • $2,500

No. of Scholarships: Each year, up to 1,450 scholarships are given out.

Criteria for eligibility

Those applying must:

  • be a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident, or a Protected Person (visa students are not eligible),
  • The minimum GPA for the scholarship is 3.2 GPA. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 between September to April of the previous academic year.
  • be a resident of Alberta. To be considered a resident of Alberta, one of the following must be true:
  • one parent or legal guardian must have lived in Canada as a permanent resident for at least 12 months in a row before the student can start post-secondary studies, or
  • Alberta is the last place the student lived for 12 months straight before starting college or university, or
  • Before the student went to college or university, his or her spouse or partner lived in Alberta as a permanent resident for 12 months straight.
  • be enrolled full-time in the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate or professional program at a publicly funded post-secondary institution in Alberta,
  • be in good enough academic standing, as decided by the college or university.

A Louise McKinney Scholarship is not available to students who:

  • have been nominated for a Jason Lang Scholarship in the same school year
  • are in a graduate program
  • are an apprentice, or
  • are upgrading.

Selection is based on how well you did in school. Each school can only get a certain number of scholarships, and the deadlines for applying vary from school to school.

2. Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarship – Study outside Alberta

Requirements for Louise McKinney Post-secondary Scholarship

  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a person who is protected (visa students are not eligible),
  • be a resident of Alberta. To be considered a resident of Alberta, one of the following must be true:
    • – At least one parent or legal guardian has lived in Canada permanently for at least 12 months in a row before the student starts post-secondary studies and is living in Alberta,
    • – Alberta is the last place the student lived for twelve (12) months in a row before starting post-secondary school, or
    • – The student’s partner or spouse lives in Alberta.
  • continue to study full-time at a post-secondary school outside of Alberta in their second or later year of an undergraduate or professional program:
    • – Studied full-time at a post-secondary school outside of Alberta during the previous school year, and
    • – The study program can’t be offered in Alberta, and
    • – The student’s class rank is in the top 2% of all students who took the same program the year before.

Students are not eligible for a Louise McKinney Scholarships if they:

  • – in a graduate program,
  • – enrolled part-time,
  • – an apprentice, or
  • – Currently upgrading.

How to Apply – Application Process

  • Students who study outside of Alberta must submit:
  • an academic transcript, and
  • a letter from the Registrar indicating their class standing in the two per cent of the program enrolment of their previous year of study, and
  • a completed application form by the applicant
  • Your school or institution must put an official signature or seal on your transcript. This shows that the document is from your school or institution. Copies that have been copied or faxed will not be accepted. Students in college or university must call their schools to get their official transcripts.
  • The minimum GPA for the scholarship is 3.2 GPA. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 between September to April of the previous academic year.

Deadline

Apply for this scholarship between August 1 to January 15.
