About Genocide Internships and How it Works

Genocide Watch, Inc. is the world’s first anti-genocide non-governmental organization (NGO) and the founder and chair of the Alliance Against Genocide. Every Spring, Summer, and Fall, students and volunteers can work for Genocide Watch, Inc. without getting paid. Genocide Watch is hiring virtual staff for the summer of 2023 right now. Applications must be sent in by April 1, 2023.

The http://www.genocide-watch.com and http://www.genocidewatch.net archives have the most information in the field. From 2000 to 2016, they had over 70 million hits. It is used by activists and people who study genocide all over the world. Since 2016, Genocide Watch has used its current website, http://www.genocidewatch.com, to better connect website users to Genocide Watch’s social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter. Every month, more than 30,000 different people visit the website. Our Alliance Against Genocide website, against-genocide.org, is a hub for more than 100 organizations that are part of the Alliance Against Genocide, which is the world’s first and largest group of organizations working to stop genocide.

Staff members who work for free and interns can do their jobs from wherever they live. Genocide Watch has people working for it from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy, Australia, and India. We are looking for interns and volunteers from Africa, Asia, and Latin America in particular.

Every internship and volunteer job is done online. Staff members can work on their own time, and a time-keeping program can keep records of how many hours they work. Interns and staff volunteers meet with their managers once a week at an agreed time.

How Many Hours Does an Intern or Volunteer Work per week at Genocide Watch?

During the first week of internship, new volunteers or interns must do the full Genocide Watch training and then work at least 20 hours a week. After their first three months, staff can ask to keep working for Genocide Watch as volunteers. If chosen, they will have to work for Genocide Watch at least ten hours per week.

Students who do internships are expected to work the number of hours per week that their schools require for credit. During the school year, internships have hours and start dates that depend on the intern’s internship program and class schedule.

Genocide Watch interns and volunteers will be supervised by the Genocide Watch management team, which is made up of former Genocide Watch interns who now work for human rights NGOs, a public health company, several graduate schools, and Prof. Gregory Stanton.

Genocide Watch Internship: Application deadlines

• Fall (September 2023– January 2024): July 15, 2023
• Spring (January 2024 – May 2024): ​December 1, 2023
• Summer (June 1, 2023 – Aug 2023): ​April 1, 2023

Basic Requirements for Genocide Internships 2023

• Applicants should be self-motivated persons who are passionate about genocide prevention;
• Previous experience in studying, researching, and writing about genocides;
• Eagerness to get involved in a variety of activities and to learn on the job;
• Fluency in written English;
• Ability to use Microsoft 365 Office Suite;
• Some experience working with Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook;
• Fluency in a second language is a plus;
• Training in the use of Microsoft Teams will be provided;

Application must include the following documents/requirements listed below. Failure to provide these necessary results to automatic disqualification.

Applicants must submit ONE PDF document containing the following details by the deadline for the term for which you are applying:

1. Submit a cover letter explaining why you hope to work for Genocide Watch
2. Provide a resumé, including foreign language skills
3. Include a short writing sample (2-3 pages – an excerpt from a longer paper is fine)
4. Transcripts (may be unofficial)​
5. Provide the names and contact information for 2 professional or academic references

Compensation

This is a chance to do a virtual internship or volunteer work without getting paid. Applicants are encouraged to look for other ways to pay for their studies, such as grants, stipends, or fellowships. We are happy to help with this process if it is needed. Students may also get credit for work completed at Genocide Watch through their academic programs. Roles may have the opportunity to become full-time paid jobs if funding is obtained.
